Oral Hygiene with Braces
Braces are a big step toward a healthier, more beautiful smile — but they also require extra attention when it comes to keeping your teeth clean. At Seattle Braces, Dr. C. Neil Nicholson emphasizes the importance of excellent oral hygiene throughout your orthodontic journey to help prevent cavities, gum disease, and staining around brackets.
Why Brushing and Flossing Matter More with Braces
Braces create small spaces that trap food and plaque. Without proper cleaning, these areas can lead to:
Tooth decay
Gum inflammation
Bad breath
White spots (early signs of enamel damage)
With the right tools and habits, you can keep your smile healthy and your treatment on track.
Brushing Tips for Braces
Brush after every meal using a soft-bristled toothbrush or electric toothbrush.
Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle and clean above, below, and around each bracket.
Brush for 2 full minutes — don’t rush!
Use fluoride toothpaste to help protect enamel.
Consider using an interdental brush or proxy brush to clean around wires and tight spaces.
Flossing with Braces
Flossing is still essential — even with brackets and wires in the way.
Use orthodontic floss threaders or pre-threaded floss picks to reach between your teeth.
Consider trying a water flosser to flush out food and plaque more easily.
Floss once a day, every day.
It might take a little extra time at first, but regular flossing prevents gum problems and helps your treatment progress smoothly.
Helpful Hygiene Tools
To make oral care with braces easier, we recommend:
Orthodontic toothbrushes (manual or electric)
Interdental brushes
Fluoride mouthwash
Water flossers
Orthodontic wax (to ease irritation from brackets or wires)
Not sure what tools are right for you? Our team is happy to help you choose products that fit your lifestyle and treatment plan.
Don’t Skip Your Dental Cleanings
Even with daily brushing and flossing, regular cleanings and exams with your general dentist are a must. We recommend visiting your dentist every six months — or more often if recommended — while you’re in braces.
