Early Orthodontic Treatment in Seattle, WA
A healthy smile starts early. At Seattle Braces, Dr. C. Neil Nicholson offers early orthodontic evaluations and treatment options for children, often referred to as Phase 1 orthodontics. Addressing dental and jaw issues at a young age can lead to better long-term outcomes and may reduce the need for more complex treatment later.
What Is Early Orthodontic Treatment?
Early treatment — also called interceptive orthodontics — typically begins between the ages of 7 and 10, while a child still has a mix of baby and adult teeth. The goal is to identify and correct developing problems with tooth alignment, jaw growth, or bite function before they become more serious.
Why Age 7?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. By this age, enough permanent teeth have erupted for Dr. Nicholson to detect potential concerns, such as:
Crossbite
Underbite or overbite
Crowding or spacing issues
Narrow upper jaw
Thumb-sucking effects or tongue-thrusting habits
Early loss of baby teeth
Even if braces aren’t needed right away, early monitoring allows us to guide jaw growth and tooth development at the ideal time.
Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment
Starting orthodontic care early can offer several advantages, including:
Creating space for permanent teeth to erupt properly
Guiding jaw development to prevent future bite issues
Reducing the risk of impacted teeth
Improving facial symmetry
Helping correct harmful oral habits
Possibly shortening or simplifying future treatment with braces or Invisalign®
Every child is different. Some may benefit from early treatment, while others can wait until more adult teeth come in. At Seattle Braces, Dr. Nicholson provides honest, personalized recommendations based on your child’s unique needs.
What to Expect at Your Child’s First Visit
During your child’s initial consultation, Dr. Nicholson will:
Evaluate jaw development and tooth position
Take digital X-rays and photos if needed
Determine if early intervention is appropriate
Recommend a treatment plan or periodic check-ins if no immediate action is needed
We strive to make every visit fun, informative, and stress-free — so your child feels comfortable and confident in their care.
