Orthodontic Emergencies

Orthodontic Emergencies & What To Do

Orthodontic issues can happen from time to time, but most are minor and can be managed at home until you visit our office. At Seattle Braces, Dr. C. Neil Nicholson and our experienced team are here to guide you through any braces-related problems — whether it's a poking wire, broken bracket, or something more urgent.

What Is an Orthodontic Emergency?

While most issues with braces are not true emergencies, it’s important to know what needs prompt attention and what can wait until your next visit.

Common, Non-Urgent Issues:

  • Loose or broken brackets

  • Poking wires

  • Lost separators

  • Minor soreness or irritation

  • Loose bands or aligners

Call Us Immediately If You Experience:

  • Severe pain or swelling

  • Trauma to the face, mouth, or teeth

  • Bleeding that doesn’t stop

  • A wire or piece of the appliance that is swallowed or inhaled

How to Handle Minor Orthodontic Problems

Here are some simple tips for managing common issues until you can get to our office:

  • Loose Bracket or Band - If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax to prevent irritation. If it comes off entirely, keep it safe and bring it to your next visit. Call us to schedule a repair.

  • Poking Wire - Use a pencil eraser or clean cotton swab to gently push the wire flat against your tooth. Orthodontic wax can help reduce discomfort. Avoid cutting the wire yourself unless instructed.

  • General Soreness - Mild discomfort is common after braces are first placed or adjusted. Rinse with warm salt water and take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed. Soft foods can also help ease irritation.

  • Lost Separator - Separators (spacers) are designed to create space between teeth before certain procedures. If one falls out, call our office to see if it needs to be replaced.

Orthodontic First Aid Kit: What to Keep on Hand

Having these supplies ready can help you stay comfortable until you’re seen by Dr. Nicholson.
